MagNet Toronto

Last week I was in Toronto attending “MagNet”: Magazines Canada’s annual conference. Magazines Canada is the national trade association representing the leading Canadian- owned, Canadian-content consumer, cultural, specialty, professional and business magazines in the country. www.magazinescanada.ca

MagNet brings the entire industry together from across a diverse nation to refresh our visions, reconnect with friends and meet new peers and global industry leaders.

It was fantastic. I learnt a lot and left with some new strategies to become better at what I love to do: writing and editing. Over 50 carefully designed sessions were offered: from a panel of social media experts who shared the latest innovative ideas and effective practices for using all the social media tools to building a freelance career; from finding good markets to deliver great writing to demystifying insurance for freelancers.

One session that I found of particular interest was “What Writers Need to Know about Freedom of Information”. In Canada, a growing body of evidence suggests that process is becoming more difficult. I suggest you watch this following link on just how serious it is in this country. I was shocked. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5NIpDlSdvU

Now, I’m back in Vancouver and ready to assimilate what I have learnt into the next chapter of my career!
